Twelve years of professional ice hockey taught me that performance is measured, not felt. THRIVE+ and SECOND PEAK apply the same discipline to the next forty years of your life: test, intervene, verify, repeat — every ninety days.

Aerobic base and ceiling
A steady weekly base of easy aerobic work to build the engine, and one interval session to raise its ceiling. VO₂max is the single strongest modifiable predictor of all-cause mortality, so it gets tested, not assumed.

The training protocol
Four sessions,
one rhythm.
Two lower-body days, two upper-body days, and aerobic work stacked around them. Every session has a purpose, a prescribed intensity and a recorded result.
Anatomy of one session
01
Prepare
Raise temperature, prime joints, wake the nervous system up.
02
Primary
The main strength movement of the day, capped and logged.
03
Secondary
Single-leg and posterior-chain work to close the gaps.
04
Conditioning
Aerobic work at a prescribed intensity, never random.
05
Downregulate
Breathing and a short check-in before you leave the floor.
How the aerobic week is balanced
Walking
Easy base
Tempo
Threshold
Max
Most of the week sits comfortably below threshold. The small hard fraction is what raises the ceiling — and it only works when the easy base underneath it is protected.
The principles behind every session
Train the patterns, not the muscles
Hinge, squat, push, pull and carry. Everything else is a variation on those five.
Progress by effort, not by ego
Hinge, squat, push, pull and carry. Everything else is a variation on those five.
Keep the easy work easy
Hinge, squat, push, pull and carry. Everything else is a variation on those five.
Build what you will need at seventy
Hinge, squat, push, pull and carry. Everything else is a variation on those five.
Deload before you need it
Hinge, squat, push, pull and carry. Everything else is a variation on those five.
Training
A fourth session is added and the aerobic base extends across the week.
Nutrition
Protein anchored early in the day; carbohydrate placed around the hardest sessions.
Recovery
Ten minutes of breathwork post-session. First sleep-debt audit against the wearable trend.
Testing
Weekly resting HR, HRV and waist. Session effort logged against planned load.
Milestone
Aerobic base established and held for two consecutive weeks
Inside a block
Tested, coached, cooked, retested.
Every block runs the same four threads. What changes is the prescription — and it changes because the numbers said so.
